Magsaysay Foundation to hold free teachers’ training

This year’s Ramon Magsaysay Festival Month is particularly significant because it commemorates the 105th birth anniversary of President Ramon Magsaysay.

To mark the occasion, the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation will hold a one-day free teachers’ training on Sept. 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ramon Magsaysay Center, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

The foundation invites teachers to attend the free training, which will focus on creative methods for teaching values such as compassion, integrity, fairness, generosity, industry, simplicity, tolerance, to students of any age using the inspiring story of President Magsaysay and the more than 200 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees.

RMAF has invited 2012 Magsaysay awardee Dr. Romulo Davide, himself an educator, to speak during the training. He will share inspiring thoughts, principles, and personal anecdotes with the teachers and how all these had shaped his experience and understanding of education.

In the afternoon, RMAF will hold a preview of 15 short videos that the Foundation commissioned through a grant from the Text2Teach program, which seeks to improve the quality of teaching and learning in grades 5 and 6 public schools.

The program provides educational videos and lesson plans aligned with the basic education curriculum, for Math, Science, English and Values. Spearheaded by Ayala Foundation, the other members of the alliance include Nokia Corporation, the Department of Education, Globe Telecom, and Pearson Foundation. Toshiba Corporation, long-time donor of Ayala Foundation’s education projects, will donate 853 units of 32-inch LED TV sets to Text2Teach for distribution to the recipient schools.

The videos, which are downloadable using the Nokia Education Delivery (NED) software through Globe’s mobile network, feature the lives of Magsaysay Awardees—all useful materials designed for teaching values education. The teachers will be the first to view this interactive, multimedia package, and they will be given an opportunity to critique the videos.
