THE FILIPINOS Against Proposition 54 movement, which includes
the National Federation of Filipino American Associations,
Filipino Civil Rights Advocates and FOCUS, will hold a meeting
on September 8 to coordinate efforts to defeat the proposition.
They are urging all sectors of the California Fil-Am community
to vote on October 7 against a "color-blind" proposition
that they claim will be dangerous to health and well-being
and might be used as a tool for racial discrimination. The
Proposition 54 ballot initiative would make it illegal for
state and local agencies, including schools, hospitals, and
law enforcement agencies to collect or analyze data on race
or ethnicity. While the proposition is supposed to create
a color-blind society, critics argue that it will deprive
health care practitioners of the measured data needed to trace
the root cause of diseases and address them effectively.
All members of the California Fil-Am community are being
urged to register online at www.ss.ca.gov/elections/votereg1.html
and vote against the proposition.
