Dinner Dance Fundraiser
to Raise Money for AIDS
February 14, 2004
Westin Hotel
1 Old Bayshore Highway
Millbrae, California
"SAYAW ng Puso" (Dance of the Heart), a dinner-dance
fundraiser, is being organized to help raise funds for the
Filipino Task Force on AIDS, an organization dedicated to
help curb the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Filipino community,
and to provide assistance to those who are living with AIDS.
Mona Lisa Yuchengco, publisher of Filipinas Magazine is chairing
this event.
"Sayaw ng Puso" is a dinner-dance event to be held
on February 14 at the Westin Hotel on 1 Old Bayshore Highway
in Millbrae, California. A short program headlined by singer
Lerma de la Cruz and performer Thage Montecarlo and a silent
auction opens the event, which is then followed by a dinner
and dance to the accompaniment of Expressions. Tickets are
60 dollars each and may be purchased through the Filipino
Task Force on AIDS at +415 9202630. MasterCard, Visa, and
checks are accepted. Tables of 10 are available and may be
purchased at a discounted rate of 550 dollars on or before
January 23, 2004.
Many minority-based organizations, such as the Filipino Task
Force on AIDS, have been affected by recent moves to restrict
funding to HIV/AIDS programs. As the focus for HIV prevention
begins to shift toward prevention with positives and veers
away from culturally and linguistically targeted prevention
programs and care services, FTFA has decided to mobilize the
Filipino community and raise its own funds through events
such as this.
The Filipino Task Force on AIDS provides vital HIV and AIDS
information and services to diverse segments of the Filipino
community, through individual assistance, educational outreach
activities at community events, workshops at social, civic
and church organizations with a high Filipino base, public
service announcements in print, radio and television, and
one-on-one outreach with community members. According to serosurveillance
reports by the San Francisco Department of Public Health,
and the National Minority AIDS Council, Asians and Pacific
Islanders comprise 11 percent of reported AIDS cases among
people of color in San Francisco; 35 percent of the AIDS cases
among Asians and Pacific Islanders are Filipinos (SFDPH, September
2003). In the state of California, 35 percent of AIDS cases
among Asians and Pacific Islanders are also Filipinos (National
Minority AIDS Council).
Any dance groups interested in joining the dance exhibition
may contact Raffy Villapando or Victor Hall at +415 9202630.
