FilAm Council of San
Francisco 35th anniversary

February 7, 2004

Grand Ballroom
Clarion Hotel
Millbrae, California

THE FILIPINO AMERICAN Council of San Francisco, one of the oldest Filipino community-based non-profit organizations in the US, will celebrate its 35th anniversary with a fundraiser and dinner dance on February 7 at the Grand Ballroom of Clarion Hotel at Millbrae, California. Circe Sola McLeod, council president, together with the board members and staff, takes pride in this milestone of uninterrupted service to the underserved Filipino immigrant community.

Founded in 1969 as an umbrella organization for several Filipino associations, the FilAm Council is now a service organization focused on providing educational, socio-cultural, health and nutrition support to newly arrived immigrants, disadvantaged seniors, Filipino-American residents, and other multi-ethnic residents of San Francisco.

The council's Senior Opportunities Services Program provides older members of the Filipino community and other disadvantaged seniors with subsidized nutritious meals daily during lunchtime on weekdays. It also provides senior citizen resource accessing, referral services to hospitals and other medical agencies. Social activities include bingo, dancing, Tai Chi and light aerobics. When possible, there are guided tours to museums, parks and other activities. Free health care services are also offered once a month, as well as free legal consultancy when requested.

The organization's Filipino American Employment Training Center provides a venue for job readiness skills; computer literacy; résumé preparation and writing; job search and resources; and self-awareness and leadership skills. Survival skills are also taught to newly arrived Filipino youths, such as Immigration 101 (an orientation on local community resources and introduction to their new homeland), after-school programs and ESL classes. To those with an entrepreneurial bent, the council offers training and consultancy classes for start-up businesses.

The dinner and dance entrance fee is 50 dollars, 100-percent tax deductible. For more information, please call +415 6260773 and +415 6261608.
