Pagbabasa' (Magical Reading)

June 16, 2004
6:30 p.m.
Kalayaan Hall,
Philippine Consulate General
556 Fifth Ave.
Manhattan, New York

COLLABORATIVE Opportunities for Raising Empowerment (CORE) Inc. presents "Mahiwagang Pagbabasa" (Magical Reading) on June 16 at 6:30pm in Kalayaan Hall at the Philippine Consulate General, 556 Fifth Ave. in Manhattan.

The event will feature performances highlighting different aspects of Filipino culture -- dance, martial arts, music and literature. Each performance will be introduced by a reading related to that particular presentation. Participating performers include Kinding Sindaw (indigenous dances of the Philippines), Kuntaw Kali Kruzada (Filipino martial arts), Aida and Cristine Gamboa (traditional Filipino folk songs), Venancio Cabel (poetry) and Zorinah Juan (poetry).

At the event, CORE will announce the donation of a READ Philippines book collection to three branches of the New York Public Library (Donnell, Mid-Manhattan and Performing Arts at the Lincoln Center). Read Philippines aims to develop greater awareness, interest and understanding of the Filipino culture and history among children of Filipino descent and the public at large by establishing Filipino book collections in public and school libraries throughout the Tri-State area. Suggested donation at the event is five dollars. All proceeds will go towards the CORE-READ Philippines program.

CORE Inc. is a not-for-profit organization composed of a volunteer group of young Filipino professionals in the New York tri-state area. CORE's primary vision is to empower Filipino professionals as a collective body in the United States. CORE also seeks to provide an avenue for socio-economic involvement to build a stronger Filipino-American community and assist in Philippine national development.
