NOW on its seventh year, the Filipinas Magazine Achievement
Awards recognizes the accomplishments of the advocates, role
models, and movers and shakers in the Filipino-American community.
Filipinas magazine, which recently celebrated its 12th anniversary,
is the only nationally circulated Filipino-American monthly
glossy.
The ten outstanding men and women in their fields of endeavor
are:
· Reynaldo Gamboa Alejandro, for his contributions
to the field of Arts and Culture. Mr. Alejandro is a renowned
dancer and choreographer with the Philippine Dance Company
of New York, chef, and author of books such as "Flavors
of Asia" and "Philippine Hospitality." Sponsored

· Emme Tomimbang, for her contributions to the field
of Communication. Ms Tomimbang is the executive producer and
host of "Emme's Island Moments," a TV show in Hawaii,
and an entrepreneur. She has been in media since she was a
little girl. Sponsored by ABS-CBN International Inc.
· Dawn Buholano Mabalon, Ph.D., for her contributions
to the field of Community Service. Ms Mabalon is a history
professor and the founder and chair of the Little Manila Foundation,
working to preserve Little Manila in Stockton. She is also
a documentary filmmaker, and a poet whose work appeared in
the anthology "Going Home to a Landscape: Writings by
Filipinas." Sponsored by California State Automobile

· Marissa Peterson, for her contribution to the field
of Corporate Leadership. Ms Peterson is the executive vice
president of network services and worldwide operations, and
chief customer advocate of Sun Microsystems, Inc. She was
named one of the Top 100 Women in Business by San Francisco
Business Times. Sponsored by Western Union.
· David Maquiling, for his contributions to the field
of Entertainment. Mr. Maquiling directed the highly acclaimed
"Too Much Sleep," inspired by the small suburban
town in New Jersey where he grew up. He is a member of the
prestigious Directors Guild of America. Sponsored by Anheuser-Busch

· Celia Tomlinson, for her contributions to the field
of Entrepreneurship. Ms Tomlinson is the founder and president
of RHOMBUS P.A. Engineers and Consultants in Albuquerque,
New Mexico and the author of "Don't Tell Me You Can't."

· Noemi Castillo, for her lifelong advocacy of the
community. Ms Castillo is the director of the Ethnic Ministries
of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and was responsible for
organizing "A Journey of Faith," a celebration of
100 years of Filipino presence in the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

· Enrique M. Ostrea, Jr., M.D., for his contributions
to the field of Medicine. Mr. Ostrea is a professor of pediatrics
at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He invented
a method for Detecting Maternally Transferred Drug Metabolites
in Newborn Infants. Sponsored by Genentech Inc.
· William R. Tamayo, for his contributions to the
field of Public Affairs. Mr. Tamayo is a regional attorney
for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and recently
helped settle a lawsuit involving 13 Filipinos who were unfairly
terminated from video company Sega of America. He also helped
settle the case on the Northern Mariana Islands sweatshops
involving the exploitation of foreign contract workers. Sponsored

· Alexander C. De Ocampo, for his contributions to
the field of Youth Leadership. Mr. De Ocampo is the president
of the California Young Democrats and is the first Filipino
