"Be Curious

(That's the Science Whiz-Kid's Way)
By Christine C. Rivero

FEET shuffled, heads were scratched, and noses twitched-all for the love of science. This was the scene during the Grand Finals of the 1998 Young Scientists' Quiz and Sci-Art Program.

Top science students from elementary schools all over the country went into "superbrain mode" as they answered quiz questions and performed a few mini-experiments in both Team and Individual categories. In the individual category, for example, the kids were asked to show five different ways to make noise from a piece of paper. Then they were to explain what was similar about those five ways. After a lot of paper scrunching, 12-year-old Paul Leonard Hilario, representing NCR, explained, "We produced vibrations in the paper by beating, folding or blowing on it."

The kids also had to work on an investigative project for two to three months which they had to defend in front of a panel of judges. The scores for their projects were added with their quiz scores to determine who would win the major prizes.

Folks in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur will surely be celebrating because their team, composed of Lowella Grace Joy Devis, Ian David Garcia and John Anthony Tindoc (representing Region 9), won first place in the Team Category. Meanwhile, Camiguin will have more than sweet lansones to boast of because Camiguin science whiz, Joshua Suico (representing Region 10), nabbed first prize in the Individual Category.

Science isn't exactly everyone's favorite subject so these kids would like to share some tips. John, speaking for his team, says, "You have to be interested in becoming good in science ... be a wide-reader, practice analyzing and identifying theories."

"Read more and more books about science," adds Joshua, "and be curious about the world around you."

The other winners in the Team Category are, 2nd place, Hannah Marie Cabrillas, Dominic Baylas, Jonathan Lapitan (NCR), 3rd, Ivy Gregorina Molina, John Lyle Tron Gomez, Francis Archie Riva (Region 11), 4th, Verlee Pangilinan, Yasha Bianca Barretto, Cherriza Serrano (Region 3) and 5th, Reiner Veridiano, Lalaine Macalalag and Arvin Joseph Eularia (Region 4).

Don Joven Agravante from Cebu (Region 7) took the second prize in the Individual Category followed by 3rd placer, Louis Allen Ortal (Region 4), 4th, Paul Leonard Hilario (NCR), 5th, Marie Joan Monilla (Region 5) and 6th, Albert Arcalles (Region 8).

The following were also awarded the Grand Prize in the Sci-Art Competition: Daniel Paul Rimando (CAR), Gomer Godalla (NCR) and Mary Jade Madero (Region 6).
