WANT to see a shark up close? Want to meet a big, friendly octopus? How does standing inside the belly of a whale sound to you? If you think you have to dive in with scuba gear in the deep, dark waters of the Pacific to see the wonders of the sea, well, you’re wrong.
The Foundation for Resource Conservation Inc., with the Department of Education, Culture and Sports, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources recently opened "Wonders of the Sea: An Exhibit Focusing on Everyday Sea Life" at the Uniwide Sales Coastal Mall on Roxas Boulevard in Parañaque City.
This exhibit takes you to the very heart of the ocean and presents to you the rich diversity of marine life. And you don’t even have to learn how to swim!
Sea replicas of creatures from shore to sea. There are also models of various creatures of the deep, like the moray eel, the whale shark and the puffer fish.
You can learn all about the migratory patterns of the gray whale and other marine animals. Check out the really great-looking species of jellyfish swimming with various kinds of fishes. You can also touch marine creatures like crabs and starfish in the petting trays. But do handle them with care, okay?
There are dioramas where you can learn all about the things that harm our seas like manmade hazards like pollution, dynamite fishing and muro-ami fishing (a method of fishing where the fishermen thump the corals to scare the fish out. This does not only disturbs the fish, but also destroy the corals). There are interesting videos about natural hazards like typhoons and tsunamis.
More than ever, we need to preserve our seas. The "Wonders of the Sea" exhibit aims to spread awareness about this concern. Let us stop taking our seas for granted. So hurry and ask mom or dad to take you to the exhibit. It will only be on display until December this year.
