Public urged: Pray for boxer in coma

THE family of Cebuano boxer, ZC Oliveros “The Dream” Gorres asks the public for prayers for the boxer's recovery. The 26-year-old Gorres was in critical condition after he was rushed to the hospital in Las Vegas for an emergency surgery yesterday.

Gorres' father-in-law, Nilo Nicabane told Cebu Daily News that Gorres was in coma after an operation was conducted in his left brain because of blood clot. (See related story on page 32.)

Gorres was in Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas for his fight against Luis Melendez from Colombia.

In a report from ABS-CBN, Gorres was rushed to University Medical Center after going down in the last round of his fight with Melendez.

But Gorres was able to get up 30 seconds before the bell rang, he was then declared winner in the bantam weight division fight via unanimous decision.

“Gorres stayed on the floor for about 5 minutes before he was brought out of the Mandalay Bay on a stretcher and brought to hospital,”ABS-CBN reports.

Nicadane said he would not have cared if Gorres lost as long as he was in good condition.

“Nalipay mi nga nakadaug siya pero may pag napilde na lang siya basta kay makasiguro lang mi nga naa siya sa mayo nga kondisyon (We were happy that he won but it would have been better if he lost as long as he was in good condition),” said Gorres' father-in-law Nilo Nicabane yesterday after learning that the boxer was in a coma and in critical condition after his fight in Las Vegas.

Gorres, who is from barangay Canduman, Mandaue City, has a wife, Datches, and three children.

Fellow boxer, AJ “Bazooka” Banal also urged the public to pray for Gorres.

Banal said that they were also surprised with how the event turned out.

He believes that Gorres will get through it.

“Iampo lang gyud nato siya. Pero sa akong tan-aw kaya ran a niya kay kusgan man to siya. Nalipay mi nakadaog siya pero unta wa muabot sa ingon ini,” said Banal.

After their practice yesterday, Banal and other boxers went straight to Sto. Niño church to pray for Gorres.
