Measure seeks P5 to P10 reward for rat catchers
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER.
MANILA, Philippines— More than a month after the Department of Health expressed alarm over what it called an “unprecedented” number of leptospirosis cases in Metro Manila, a Valenzuela City councilor has filed a draft ordinance proposing a monetary reward for residents who catch rats.
Authored by Councilor Alvin Feliciano, the measure—which was dubbed the “Catch-the-rat Ordinance”—will pay P5 to people who catch a rat which weighs less than half a kilo.
If the rodent weighs more, the mouse catcher will receive P10.
According to the draft ordinance, it doesn’t matter if the rat is dead or alive as long as it is caught in Valenzuela City.
Feliciano said that should his measure be approved, the city health department would be placed in charge of the project.
“The ordinance will not only lessen the possibility of residents acquiring leptospirosis, it will also give people a little income,” said the councilor who also heads the city’s Liga ng mga Barangay.
