Bing mounts religious
musical-comedy revue

EVER since she was a student at the Ateneo de Cagayan (Xavier University) in Cagayan de Oro City, Lourdes ''Bing'' Dela Llana Pimentel loved writing poems and composing music. After getting married to Aquilino ''Nene'' Pimentel, who would later become a senator of the land, Bing had her hands full with her varied roles as teacher, wife and mother, but she never neglected her love for composing songs.

As Nene's political career took numerous turbulent turns, Bing found a welcome outlet and medium for self-expression and communication in her music.

Meaningful songs

Ten years ago, she thought of compiling her best and most meaningful ''biographical'' songs into a show on her life with Nene through the years. Later, she did a second concert with another composer, the Nigerian ambassador to the Philippines. Two years ago, in a move to educate the voting public about electoral reform and what to do about cheating at the polls, she mounted the popular revue, ''Huwag Pumayag sa Dagdag--Bawas.''

This year, Bing's songwriting skills have taken on a decidedly more spiritual tone. Disturbed by the problems, mistakes and hypocrisies that make it so difficult for people to live a good, Christ-centered Christian life today, Bing is producing the religious musical-comedy revue, ''Nasaan si Hesus (Sa Mundong Makasalanan?)'' on Dec. 1, 10 and 11 at the PCIBank Theater on Makati ave. in Makati.

Special production

The show is a special production for Bing, even closer to her heart than the other significant shows she has produced. She thought of mounting it after she saw many Christians straying away from their faith due to the pressures and distractions of today's materialistic and hedonistic world.

''So many have forgotten Jesus Christ--and some even wrongly think that He has forgotten them--thus the titles of our new presentation,'' Bing says. ''The show is a mutual search involving Christ and troubled or neglectful Christians. It tackles a number of problematic situations, exposes hypocritical behavior, and points the way to solutions that will help make people better Christians.''

''The irony,'' the producer-composer continues, ''is that we are the only Christian nation in Asia, and yet quite a number of us no longer practice our religion. I saw this and asked myself what I could do to help alleviate the problem. Since my talent lies in composing songs, I decided to use it to evangelize audiences in this production.

Evangelizing power

''At first, I got the project started all by myself, since I felt so strongly about its potential evangelizing power--specially among the young, who need to be enlightened most of all. But then, I saw that the show would get more support and greater exposure among religious groups if it were sponsored by high-credibility organizations like the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines. So, I submitted the show's material to the CDCP and prayed for the best.

''Happily, we got that--and more. After reading the show's script, CDCP representatives said they were not only sponsoring the show but also presenting it, meaning that the CDCP was making 'Nasaan si Hesus?' one of its special projects for Jubilee Year 2000.

''In fact, Bishop Oscar V. Cruz, President of the CDCP, has written a very inspiring message for our souvenir program. It reminds all Catholics that the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, is calling all of us to, in his words, prepare for and celebrate the 200th anniversary of Christ's birth and our redemption, describing it as the springtime of Christian life… But we need to prepare…

Profound catechetical experience

'''The musical revue 'Nasaan si Hesus?' is one way to prepare ourselves for the Jubilee Year. The script, the music and the staging have been so well crafted so as to allow the pursuit of art to transcend into a profound catechetical experience. Which makes this presentation totally different from the ordinary--this one carries a message for life and living, speaking directly to your heart and soul.'''

Her spirits boosted by the CDCP's backing and message, Bing has worked even harder to make her dream show a reality, enlisting the support of Banco Filipino, Remejus, Inc., Allied Bank, Ayala Land, Inc., Metrobank Foundation, Inc., National Bookstore, Philippine Tobacco Flu-Curing and Re-Drying Corp. and Foundation Specialist.

Guest star

The show's cast is also committed to coming up with an entertaining and spiritually-enriching presentation, starting with guest star Bimbo Cerrudo, who has been rehearsing for the show with gusto, and Chelsea Emata, Rosanna Ordoñez, Andy Bais, Rito Asilo, Joel Villaflor, Daryl Reyes, Gelyn Oñate, Carol Arao, Alita Divino, Jeanne Lim and Rey Manalo. Musical arrangements of Bing's songs are by Robert Delgado.

To enable the musical to travel to different parts of the country (it is also to be shown to Filipino communities in Hawaii), ''Nasaan si Hesus?'' is being mounted as a very portable production, with minimal sets and props. For tickets to the PCIBank Theater performances, call Anton at 713-9223. Parishes, schools, offices and organizations interested in having the show performed in their locality are asked to call Michael at 0917-9893089.--Nestor U. Torre Up
