Stars share interesting
facts about themselves
By Jocelyn Valle

IN "Runaway Bride," Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts) is described by her best friend, Peggy (Joan Cusack), as mysterious that's why a lot of guys are attracted to her. Maggie tells Peggy that she, too, is mysterious. Peggy disagrees, saying that she's weird and Maggie is quirky. Weird and quirky are two different things, Peggy stresses.

In this connection, we've talked to some stars, who share some interesting facts about themselves. Let's find out if they're weird or quirky:

"Once in a while," shares Gary Valenciano, "I get in my car and drive to places where people won't expect me to go to, like along Roxas Blvd. I just drive and go back."

Expressions

Why? "I watch people on the road," he smiles. "Sometimes, they notice me, but they think I'm going to a show or something. I just look at people and try to get the feel of how people are and look at their faces. I try and guess--What's this guy or this girl going through at this moment? I see a couple on the road and I try to see the expressions on their faces--Are they really happy with each other?"

Jolina Magdangal, on the other hand, wakes up at three in the morning for no apparent reason. "Kahit maaga akong matulog," she intones, "basta three o'clock na, bigla na lang akong nagigising. So, umiinom na lang ako ng tubig para may magawa ako. After that, nakakatulog na ulit ako, pero minsan umaabot ng five o'clock, gising pa ako."

She could be having some bad dreams, says Jolina, but, no, she doesn't believe in astral travel.

Culinary passion

Parañaque Mayor Joey Marquez is Kapampangan and he naturally likes to cook, so the kitchen is the biggest room in his house. He makes it a point to indulge in his culinary passion. "I wake up at 5:30 a.m. and breakfast before going to work," he relates.

His specialties include kare-kare, sinigang and paksiw na lechon, and he also makes his own sardines and tocino. But the one dish that is constant on Joey's dining table is steamed eggplant with either bagoong or burong isda. "I can't eat lunch or dinner without it!" he shakes his head.

Ogie Alcasid is crazy about toys. "My wife and I are always at Toy Kingdom to buy toys. People ask us if it's for Leila and we say, 'No, it's for us!'" he laughs. "We are also suckers for anything collectible--the things you get when you buy burgers. We have plenty of those in the house. I think it's nice because collecting toys is something we both enjoy. It brings us closer and it brings out the kids in us.

"I have a lot of collector-friends all over the world. I get my main supply from someone in the States and I ask him if he feels bad when some precious pieces in his collection go to someone else. Sabi n'ya, when he started selling toys, he made sure that he'd accept the fact that he would some day part with them."

Most treasured toy

Ogie's most treasured toy is his "Voltes V" robot, which he got during the Japanese anime's first Philippine invasion in the '70s. He swears the robot is original. In fact, it's still in the box and has never been opened. "I'll never sell it!" he declares.

Meanwhile, his "Mazinger Z" and "Star Wars" collections are growing.

Michael V admits he easily gets irritated. "But I have my way of not showing it," he points out. "Dinadaan ko na lang sa patawa. But sometimes I really get mean with the words I use. Nakaka-sting talaga--na inaamin ko na mali ang nasabi ko.

"Katulad ng mga pictures na naka-hang na tabingi. Although aayusin ko, hindi makakalagpas 'yan na wala akong sinasabi. Flare lang naman, so nawawala rin kaagad."

He also can't stand the sight of shampoo bottles and toothpaste tubes that are not properly capped. And he gets irked when people don't return things to their assigned spots, especially when it comes to his prized video collection. "Alam ko kung may nanood kasi naka-categorize ang mga videos ko. Kapag wala sa category, ibig sabihin, may gumalaw," he grumbles.

Randy's friends

Randy Santiago is very attached to his friends. In fact, whenever he goes to the States, he makes it a point to go to Los Angeles in California. "Kasi nandoon 'yung grupo," he explains. It is also imperative for his pals to tag along during Randy's family outings. "Para mas masaya at saka mas magulo," he explains. "I'm not a loner at ayoko ng tahimik, as much as possible."

Butch Francisco likes to eat, but not to cook. "I know I can," he quips, "but I don't want to because I end up eating what I cook!" "Startalk's" co-host instead makes sandwiches made of tuna, egg or chicken with plenty of homemade mayonnaise.

His version of the club sandwich has fillings of peanut butter, strawberry jam, mango preserve and guava jelly. Sometimes, it's with scrambled eggs, "very crisp bacon," pancit, potted meat and liver spread! Ube halaya is also good, he says, because its sweetness counteracts the blandness of bread.

"I like any kind of sandwich as long as it's not pimiento," he says. "I just can't stand its taste!" Up
