PH Asian Games tally: 3 golds, 4 silvers, 9 bronzes

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines suffered a string of sorry defeats in the last day of competition for the Filipinos in the 16th Asian Games Friday night.

The men's chess team, composed of GMs Wesley So, Eugene Torre, John Paul Gomez and Darwin Laylo, settled for a silver finish after wavering against the host and title-favorite China, 3.5-0.5.

The PH cagers, meanwhile, wound up a subpar sixth place in the men's basketball tournament after they dropped their assigment against Qatar, 71-81.

Only the young So managed to draw, while the three other GMs folded against the opponent in their respective boards.

The Philippines, tying its worst finish in basketball since 1966, was sorely outscored by the Qataris in the payoff period, 21-7.

The Philippes hauled three golds, four silvers and nine bronze medals in total.—Celest Flores
