Lea’s ‘Bayan Ko’ stirs memories
As I watched Lea Salonga sing “Bayan Ko” during the Requiem Mass for former President Cory Aquino on national television, I could not avoid reminiscing the street protests in the 1980s.
During that time, the people had only one purpose—to topple the dictatorship and bring back democracy to our enslaved and oppressed nation. We were one people, shouting “makibaka, huwag matakot,” “tama na, sobra na” with clenched fists. I am proud to have been part of that struggle.
As I listened to the song, I felt the urge of going back to the streets and help rescue this country from vultures.
