Maguindanao mayoralty bet hurt in ambush; driver killed

Thea AlbertoMANILA, Philippines -- A mayoralty candidate from Maguindanao province and two others were injured while another was killed as two unidentified men ambushed them at the Municipality of Quirino, in the province of Sultan Kudarat Thursday, a police said.
The victims were from the town of Buluan, Maguindanao and were on their way to the town of Shariff Aguak in Sultan Kudarat when the suspects shot them, said Chief Superintendent Felizardo Serapio, Region 12 police director.
Datu Kagui Salendab, who will reportedly run for mayor at Datu Paglas town in Maguindanao, his wife Bay Huda Mangalen Salendab and bodyguard Abubakkar Salendab were rushed to the Quijano hospital in Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat, said Serapio.
But the driver, Oscar Salendab, was declared dead on arrival, said Police Chief Inspector Jomar Alexis Yap, police public information officer.
The motorycle-riding suspects fled towards Shariff Aguak, said Yap.
Police said they have yet to determine the motive although they were not ruling out that the attack could have been politically motivated.
