Lakas-CMD backs Vilma Santos’ gubernatorial bid in Batangas

MANILA, Philippines -- Lipa Mayor Vilma Santos has been endorsed by the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats as its candidate for governor in Batangas province, according to a spokesman for Speaker Jose de Venecia, who heads Lakas-CMD.
Santos’ certificate of nomination and endorsement was signed Monday night, hours after the popular actress-turned-politician declared on the same day that she was going to seek the gubernatorial post, said Noel Albano.
“It was a party decision to field her,” said Albano.
The incumbent Armand Sanchez has been reported to be running under the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Partner of the Free Filipinos, Kampi), a member of the pro-administration coalition, together with Lakas-CMD.
Reports have said that Batangas has been declared a “free zone” by the administration, paving the way for other gubernatorial candidates from allied parties to run.
