Comelec relaxes broadcast political ad limits

Erwin OlivaMANILA, Philippines -- Candidates for national elective positions will now have more airtime to broadcast their political advertisements.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec), in an en banc resolution, allows each candidate, political party or party-list group 120 minutes airtime for television and 180 minutes for radio -- the limit set by Republic Act 9006 or the Fair Elections Act -- in each of the country’s 17 regions.
Previous rules on broadcast political ads set the time limit at the same number of minutes nationwide. Under the old rules, all ads aired anywhere in the country would be deducted form the aggregate number of minutes allotted each candidate, political party or party-list group.
The new resolution will take effect seven days after publication in two daily newspapers.
