MAASIN CITY, Philippines--A nine-year-old girl drowned in a flashflood and three Southern Leyte towns and a highway in this city were hit by landslides following two straight days of heavy rains on Wednesday and Thursday, local authorities said Friday.

In Tomas Oppus town, Rose Pablo, 9, drowned at the San Agustin River on Thursday when the river suddenly overflowed its banks, the town’s rural health physician, Wayne Se, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in telephone interview.

Se said the girl went swimming at the river, which is located just a short distance from her house, after bringing food to her father who was tending his farm.

On Panaon Island, a landslide covered half of the national road of the island’s towns of Pintuyan and Liloan, according to reports gathered by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) here.

Minor landslides also covered portions of the Maharlika national road along the landslide-prone Barangay Agas-agas in the town of Sogod.

Another landslide also covered half of the national road leading to the city proper of Maasin.

DPWH-Southern Leyte’s assistant district engineer, Lino Gonzalez, said heavy equipment was dispatched immediately to clear the roads of mud and debris.
