Hostage-takers, parents go on hunger strike
MANILA, Philippines -- Hostage-takers Armando "Jun" Ducat and Ceazar Carbonell, together with the parents of preschool children they held captive for 10 hours late last month will go on a hunger strike starting Monday night.
They were protesting the Manila City Prosecutors’ resolution to file multiple counts of serious illegal detention light illegal detention and violation of the gun ban against Ducat and Carbonell.
Ducat said the prosecutors ignored the good intentions they had in holding the children captive last March 28 inside a bus parked in front of the Manila City Hall.
“We will stage a hunger strike to prove that we’re sincere in our cause,” said the 56-year-old Ducat.
Ducat had demanded support for the education of at least 145 schoolchildren of the Musmos Daycare and improved housing for them and their families in Manila’s depressed district of Tondo.
The hunger strike will last seven days, he said.
Ducat and Carbonell are currently detained at the Manila Police District.
