Gov't to allow private import of rice

MANILA, Philippines -- The government said Wednesday it was allowing private firms to import up to 300,000 tons of rice.

"That's the volume we are looking at," Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap told reporters.

He added: "But that does not mean we are surrendering the entire volume to them. If at such time we see they are not moving, we will move."
