President Arroyo cited the developing BPO sector as new source of growth, replacing the electronics sector. She also called to action the NTC to address reports of vanishing cellphone credits. She also called for the creation of a Department of ICT.

President Arroyo started her speech about the country’s economy in relation to how the rest of the world was faring with the financial crisis. She then enumerated key reforms such as tax measures that was aiming to make the country a First World nation in 20 years. She thanked Congress for supporting her policies.

President Arroyo’s scheduled Sona is expected to start on time at 4p.m. Reports said her speech would last no less than 40 minutes. She is now making her way up the podium.

Rallies continue despite rains

Militant groups continue to hold rallies at Commonwealth Avenue despite rains. Rallyists are converged near Ever Gotesco Commonwealth, causing traffic snarls in both lanes. Motorists are advised to stay away and look for other routes.

Neda: Economy will recover soon

Neda chief Ralph Recto predicted a slight rebound for the country’s economy in the second half of the year. He noted that the US market was starting to recover, which would benefit local businesses. Unlike job losses in the US, he said the country still generated 1.5 million jobs over a one-year period from April last year.
