US embassy takes new rape charges ‘seriously’
MANILA, Philippines—The United States embassy here takes the new rape charges against another US Marine “seriously,” a US embassy official said Thursday.
Asked if the US embassy has the details on the rape allegations made by a 22-year-old university student, Karen Schinnerer of the US embassy public affairs office said, “We have seen the media reports on this matter. The US embassy has no additional information on this allegation.”
“However, the US takes seriously specific allegations regarding activities by visiting US personnel,” she said in a text message to INQUIRER.net.
US Ambassador to Manila Kristie Kenney is in the US to attend to a family affair.
These new rape allegations came about a month after the Philippine Court of Appeals cleared US Marine Daniel Smith of the rape charges filed by another Filipina, known only as “Nicole.”
The leftwing group Gabriela said it was able to confirm that alias John Jones was a US soldier listed in hotel records as "from Joint US Military Assistance Group (Jusmag)/Balikatan."
