No fear for Sandigan sheriff on complaint by Estrada lawyers
MANILA, Philippines -- A pending administrative complaint from lawyers of deposed president Joseph Estrada does not bother Sandiganbayan Sheriff Ed Urieta who says that he is just doing his duty in tracking down the assets of the former leader.
"I am not afraid of them. I am just doing my duty. I am more afraid of the court because it can send me to prison right away if I will not follow their orders," said Urieta who had been tasked to find close to P700 million of ill-gotten wealth by Estrada, which the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court had ordered seized.
Urieta said they were tracking down the P545-million proceeds from the illegal numbers game “jueteng” and the P189-million account of Jose Velarde, Estrada’s alias.
The court ordered the seizure after Estrada was convicted of plunder last September 12 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Urieta said they were also checking other real and personal assets of Estrada which they could seize to satisfy the Sandiganbayan’s judgment.
Aside from the money, the court also ordered the confiscation of the more than P5,000-square meter Boracay mansion in Quezon City.
Urieta said they would also include in the auction the adjacent 1,995- square meter lot, also under the name of St. Peter Holdings. The Boracay mansion was also under the name of the St. Peter Holdings before it was confiscated by the Quezon City government for failure to pay taxes.
However, Urieta said they have yet to send the notice of garnishments to freeze the bank accounts of the former leader.
"We have to investigate them [accounts] carefully because some of the tips we received turned out to be a hoax," Urieta said.
"We have to be careful otherwise we could be charged for sloppily doing our jobs," he added.
Urieta added that he had another meeting with Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Reynaldo Berroya to get updates on the registered luxury vehicles of Estrada.
