Solon wants House to investigate ‘Wowowee’ row too
MANILA, Philippines -- A separate investigation into the controversial “Wilyonaryo” segment of the noontime show “Wowowee” is being sought at the House of Representatives.
Senator Manuel Roxas has proposed a similar inquiry at the Senate.
Actor-turned politician Dan Fernandez said he would deliver a speech on the floor to ask the House committee on public information “to investigate, deliberate, and to seek the truth” on the alleged rigging of the “Wilyornaryo” segment last August 20.
As an actor, Fernandez said the issue was “near and dear to who I am and to what I proudly am.”
He said there was a need to investigate the incident to determine what new laws have to be enacted or what old policies should be amended to ensure that the trust and interest of the common Filipino would be supremely protected by all quarters.
The inquiry will also clarify, once and for all, which national agency should be tasked with the full regulation of such program and what occurs within, Fernandez said.
“Nobody seems to be in charge. The buck is being passed. And fingers are pointing non-stop,” Fernandez said in a copy of his speech released to media.
“Naghahanap po ng eksplanasyon ang mga tao. Hindi na po nila alam kung saan sila magtatanong dahil wala pong makapagbigay ng tuwid na sagot [The people are looking for an explanation. They do not know whom to ask because no one can give them a straight answer],” he said.
When the controversy first broke, the neophyte lawmaker noted that it was referred to the Department of Trade and Industry but was later referred to the Department of Justice before reaching the office of the Movie and Television Review Classification Board.
“I do not in any way, manner or form, mean to cast doubt or aspersion on any of the above mentioned government agencies as to the lack of investigation or explanation of the matter at hand,” he said.
“As a matter of fact, as a veteran of the entertainment industry, I know any explanations or clarifications of any issue that arises from an entertainment program should and are best given by the producer of the show in question,” the lawmaker said.
