(UPDATE 2) ‘Lando’ weakens as it exits RP
MANILA, Philippines -- Tropical depression "Lando" (international codename: Hagibis) weakened into an active low pressure area on its way out Wednesday afternoon after making a brief sweep of the Mindoro provinces and the Bicol Region Tuesday night, the state weather bureau said.
At 4 p.m., Lando was located 690 kilometers northeast of Virac town, in the island province of Catanduanes, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in its 5 p.m. bulletin.
But Metro Manila will still experience moderate to strong northeast-north winds, PAGASA said, adding strong winds with the surge of northeast monsoon and strong southwesterly winds from Lando will affect Luzon and Visayas seaboards.
Luzon seaboards will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers while inland seaboards in the Visayas will experience partly cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, PAGASA said a tropical depression was sighted some 1,410 kilometers east of northern Luzon, although senior weather specialist Robert Sawi earlier said there was no possibility for it to hit land.
Lando reentered the country last Monday, pulled back by the stronger typhoon "Mina" (international codename: Mitag), in what meteorologists called the "Fujiwara effect," wherein a strong storm influences the movement of a relatively weaker storm.
Lando left 14 people killed when it crossed extreme Northern Mindanao, the Visayas, and Palawan last week.
