Cagayan under state of calamity due to ‘Mina’
TUGUEGARAO CITY -- The provincial board of Cagayan has declared the province under a state of calamity on Monday after damage to crops, livestock, and infrastructure left by Typhoon "Mina" (international codename: Mitag) last week reached P400 million.
The declaration was recommended by Governor Alvaro Antonio, also chairman of the provincial disaster coordinating council, after an assessment of typhoon damage here.
The board, however, asked the provincial government to appeal to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for more calamity funds since the province has only P26 million left for that purpose.
Local officials said three bridges were damaged and needed immediate repair.
Residents of Rizal town, they said, needed help because relief goods could not be delivered since the Mauanang River has remained swollen.
The provincial government asked the social welfare and development office here to do everything it could to reach residents of Rizal.
The provincial board also asked concerned agencies to buy carabaos and distribute them to farmers either through loans or grants.
More than P3.3 million worth of livestock, consisting mostly of carabaos, was lost to the typhoon and floods.
