MANILA---Kevin Alas got off to a hot start, then struck anew in the closing seconds to help Cebuana Lhuillier ward off Maynilad, 93-85, yesterday and claim the Group B lead in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Letran gym in Manila.
Battling through injury, Alas pumped in six straight points in the last 45 seconds to keep the Gems on top after the Dragons had threatened within three, 85-82.
Allein Maliksi topscored with 28 and Alas, who sprained his left foot recently, shot 27 to power the Gems (3-1).
“It’s good that the boys held on,” said Gems coach Luigi Trillo after the heated match up that also saw Maynilad coach Frankie Lim getting ejected early in the fourth period.
Earlier, PC Gilmore came out firing in the second half for a 75-59 dumping of the skidding Pacific Pipes.
Lim was thrown out with less than seven minutes to go after getting slapped with two consecutive technical fouls for crossing the court and continuous complaining. With reports from Janardan G. Duran, Carmela L. Dayauon and April Aquino
