MANILA—Local bet Louise Alexandra Lopez advanced to the main draw after bundling out Yuko Kimura of Japan, 6-3, 6-2, in the Phinma International Junior Tennis Championship Week 2 girls division yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Lopez joins other Philippine hopefuls led by Clarice Patrimonio, Tamitha Nguyen, Maria Capadocia and Marinel Rudas in the main draw starting today where the Filipinos aim to do better than their Week 1 showing.
Local junior netters Jurence Mendoza, Jacob Lagman, Akio Sy and Kim Saraza also earned wild card berths in the main draw of the boys event.
The Filipinos failed to advance past the quarterfinals in the girls’ singles and the semifinals in girls’ doubles in Week 1 action.
Mariel Zaire Ante of the United States, Japan’s Natsumi Chimura and Chinese Taipei’s Yi-Chi Ma also clinched main draw slots after downing separate opponents yesterday.
Chimura dominated local bet Katrina Orteza, 6-0, 6-1.
Ante edged Japan’s Akane Sakuda, 6-4, 6-4, while Yi turned back Russia’s Yulia Sudnikova, 6-2, 6-1.
In the boys division, South Korea’s Yong Joo Jung edged Thailand’s Terradon Tortrakul, 6-1, 6-4, and Thailand’s Singekrawee Wattanakul prevailed over Korea’s Chan Hwi Shin, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the main draw.
Liechtenstein’s Kathinka Von Deichmann copped the girls singles Week 1 crown, while Thailand’s Nuttanon Kadchapanan ruled the boys side.
