Defending champion Stefano Marcelo held off Cebu’s Jette Calderon to bag both ROK Senior and overall crowns in the recent kickoff leg of the 2011 Petron Karting Super Series at the Carmona Circuit in Carmona, Cavite.
Marcelo, racing for Maranello-San Miguel Corp., and Calderon battled neck-and-neck throughout the 20-lap final race, but the three-time Karter of the Year managed to pull away in the last lap to win in 14 minutes and 35.914 seconds, just 0.485 seconds clear of Calderon.
Roby Benito and Juha Turalba placed third and fourth, respectively, while Franco Reyes wound up fifth.
Calderon, last year’s Clubman Karter of the Year, took the ROK Junior plum over Reyes and Japanese Marino Sato.
In the SQ Karting class, Don Batino captured both the SQ Overall and Expert crowns, wrapping up the 15-lap race in 11:30.051, three seconds ahead of Peterson Lim and Raul Baretto.
John Effinger, who was fourth in the SQ Overall, claimed the SQ Veterans crown; Daniel Castaneda clinched the SQ Novice title; and John Castelar seized the Formula SL Expert crown.
The next leg is set April 16 at the Batangas RC. Steve Silva, Contributor
