MANILA---Season 73 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) officially comes to a close with the awarding of the Athlete of the Year and the general championship today at the Araneta Coliseum.
Trackster Jesson Cid of Far Eastern University and taekwondo jin Camille Manalo of the University of Santo Tomas lead the contenders for the top individual plum along with chess player Sheider Nebato of FEU, swimmers Evan Brian Uy and Denjylie Cordero of Ateneo and basketball cager RR Garcia of FEU.
The league will also mark several firsts as the eight-member schools compete in the streetdance competition and a drum line exhibition in the ceremony starting at 3 p.m.
UST will receive its unprecedented 13th straight—and 38th overall—general championship in the seniors division after compiling 313 points built on seven titles, 10 runner-up honors and five third-place finishes.
The Tiger Cubs will pick up the overall juniors crown, as well, for the fifth consecutive season after earning 128 points.
UST high school cager Kevin Ferrer heads the junior Athlete of the Year candidates together with swimmer Ingrid Ilustre of the University of the East and chess player Jerad Docena of FEU.
La Salle will also turn over the hosting chores to Ateneo for Season 74.
Earlier, the league will honor the athlete scholars and the varsity players who represented the country in international tournaments in a separate 1 p.m. affair.
