LOOK: Dasmariñas City holds special election to replace Kiko Barzaga
DASMARIÑAS CITY, Philippines — Even amid heavy rain, voters in Dasmariñas City exercised their right to suffrage as the special election for Cavite’s 4th District commenced on Saturday.
The special poll was held to elect a congressional representative, replacing former lawmaker Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga, who was expelled by the House of Representatives last June 2 for “disruptive” and “disorderly” behavior.
Residents of Dasmariñas City will choose between five candidates, namely:
- Incumbent Dasmariñas City Mayor Jennifer Austria Barzaga
- Former vice mayor Raul Rex Del Rosario
- Former councilor Jacinto Bautista Frani Jr.
- Marvin Opamin Dupal-ag
- Leysander Aguilar
Regular voting hours began at 7 a.m. and will run until 3 p.m., but early voting for seniors, persons with disabilities and pregnant women—as well as voting for persons deprived of liberty—began as early as 5 a.m.

As heavy rains poured in the city amid the effects of the southwest monsoon, many early voters still turned out in Dasmariñas Elementary School to cast their votes.
Aug. 29 has been declared a special non-working day in Dasmariñas City to enable voters to participate in the special election.
Dasmariñas makes up the entire 4th District of Cavite, having 447,387 registered voters from 75 barangays. /das
