Sagira’s Wish: Peace

Story by Nico Alconaba

In August 2008, forces of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front attacked several civilian communities in North Cotabato after the Supreme Court declared as unconstitutional the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain signed by the government and the rebel group.

Six years later, government and MILF peace panels signed the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro. There has been relative peace in the areas where MILF forces operate. This peace, however, is being threatened by another rebel group, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, a breakaway of the MILF.

Another threat to the peace is non-passage of the Bangasamo Basic Law, which will be the basis for the creation of a new political entity aimed at ending decades of conflict in Mindanao.
