Business and the economy in 2022

Twenty-twenty two has been a tough year for the economy and business in the Philippines and the rest of the world. It is during this period when Philippine inflation sizzled to a14-year high and to tame this, key interest rates were raised seven times since May by a record 350 basis points. The stock market plunged while the peso hit an all-time low against the dollar in early October, although it has already regained some of its losses. The country’s debt stock rose beyond what was deemed ideal for emerging economies.

There were bits of positive news like the GDP growth, although soaring inflation threatens its sustainability, and the sharp fall in the country’s unemployment rate.

The story is almost the same elsewhere in the world, or even worse in some countries that they had to run to the IMF and the World Bank for help. Some businesses even in the world’s richest countries had shut down and many had to cut jobs.

What brought all these pains? The COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.
