MANILA, Philippines — The rising tensions over the West Philippine Sea (WPS) must be diffused and demilitarized through the use of civilian agencies, Senator Risa Hontiveros said.

Hontiveros in a statement on Friday said that while China’s actions over the disputed waters were unacceptable, the Philippine government must explore all legal and diplomatic actions to ensure the stability in the region.

“We must push for the demilitarization of the West Philippine Sea. I call on (the) Government to put politics and diplomacy back at the captain’s wheel with Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, fisherfolk, and civilian actions,” she said.

Hontiveros said China’s actions violated international law and the human rights of the Navy personnel.

“China’s actions at Ayungin Shoal must be condemned — repeatedly and relentlessly.  As a Filipino and as a Senator, I share the hurt and pain of the Philippine Navy over our wounded personnel,” Hontiveros said.

“China severely violated not only international law, but our human rights. This is unacceptable. Violence should not be committed on our seas,” she added.

Different personalities have already condemned China’s actions over the WPS.  United States Ambassador to the Philippines MayKay Carlson called out China on Monday for its aggressive maneuvers in the area, which has caused “bodily injury” against naval personnel.
