PNP tightens security as election season kicks off

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Marbil has ordered police units nationwide to tighten security, particularly against armed groups that may disrupt the upcoming campaign period for the 2025 elections.

Marbil made the directive on Sunday as the filing of Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for the 2025 polls ends on October 8.

“With the political climate heating up, our role is critical in ensuring a secure and fair environment for all candidates and the public. I am directing all police units to intensify security operations, especially in traditional election hotspots where tensions often escalate,” the PNP chief’s statement read.

According to Marbil, the police force will focus on areas with a history of election-related violence by increasing police visibility, installing checkpoints, and constantly monitoring these areas.

“We are putting extra attention on regions that have seen heightened activity from armed groups and criminal elements. We will not allow any threats to undermine the democratic process. Our primary objective is to prevent any form of violence or intimidation,” he added.

Earlier, Marbil issued a stern warning to all policemen against serving politicians.

He also reminded them of the importance of maintaining strict neutrality and refraining from engaging in political activities.

“The PNP remains a nonpartisan institution. Any officer found engaging in political interference or supporting candidates will face severe sanctions. Our integrity is non-negotiable, and we must uphold the rule of law at all times,” Marbil said.

The PNP’s top boss also encouraged the public to remain vigilant and coordinate with authorities if they observe any suspicious activities.
