Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson vowed to give a strong focus on modernizing the country’s transport system and providing much-needed support to jeepney drivers, as he formalized his senatorial bid via the 2025 election on Monday.

His flagship project, a state-of-the-art electric jeepney (e-jeepney) manufacturing plant in Batangas, will begin operations by 2025, marking a major milestone in Singson’s vision for a more sustainable and efficient public transport network in the Philippines.

Singson’s e-jeepneys are designed to carry 28 passengers in air-conditioned comfort, promising not only a smoother commute for the public but also increased income for jeepney drivers. These modern jeepneys are seen as an upgrade to the traditional ones, offering a significant leap forward in passenger capacity, comfort, and environmental impact, while maintaining many of the visual aspects of traditional jeepneys that have been integral to Filipino culture.

Singson committed to making these e-jeepneys accessible to drivers through a financing scheme where drivers can acquire these vehicles with zero down payment, zero collateral, and no interest — a deal that he claims only he can deliver.

Singson said this initiative aims to ease the financial burden on the drivers while ensuring they reap the benefits of modernization.

For Singson, his plan will not only help drivers earn more but will also address the longstanding issues of air pollution and traffic congestion in the country’s urban areas. He asserted that his platform promises a solution for both drivers and the commuting public, with sustainability and economic relief at the core.
