MANILA, Philippines — As the 2025 midterm elections draw near, posters linking the Bayan Muna party list to a communist front were posted in parts of Cagayan de Oro City.
According to Bayan Muna, the posters were spotted during and after the party list’s Mindanao chapter kicked off its opening salvo and caravan in the city on Friday, February 14.
“The recent appearance of black propaganda posters accusing Bayan Muna of being a communist front is a blatant attempt by anti-democratic forces to undermine the overwhelming support for our electoral comeback,” Bayan Muna party-list’s fourth nominee and Vice President for Mindanao Eufemia Cullamat said in a statement on Tuesday.
She further underscored that placing these posters is an act of red-tagging designed to vilify the party list, its members, and supporters.
“Such efforts to spread fear and misinformation will not silence us. We remain steadfast in our commitment to serve as the voice of the masses, fighting for wage increases, lower prices of basic goods, and an end to corruption,” she emphasized.
Cullamat urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Commission on Human Rights to investigate the propaganda posters and take action against such tactics.
“The absence of clear guidelines against red-tagging, despite Comelec’s commitment during a dialogue with Makabayan bloc in November 2024, enables threats, coercion, and violence against progressive candidates and their supporters,” the Bayan Muna fourth nominee underscored.
She also called on the public to stay vigilant, report incidents of red-tagging and military harassment, and assert their democratic rights.
“The people deserve free and fair elections—not an atmosphere of fear and repression,” Cullamat emphasized.
