Palace confirms passage of law postponing BARMM elections

Malacañang confirmed on Feb. 21, 2025 the signing of Republic Act 12123, which postpones parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Friday confirmed the signing of the law postponing parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed the signing of Republic Act 12123 to reporters after Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chair George Garcia announced its passage.

Under the new law, the BARMM parliamentary elections were rescheduled from May 12, 2025 to October 13, 2025.

“The next election shall be held and synchronized with the 2028 national elections and every three years thereafter,” the law states.

“The Comelec, through the Bangsamoro Electoral Office, shall promulgate rules and regulations for the conduct of the elections, enforce, and administer them pursuant to national law, this Organic Law and the Bangsamoro Electoral Code,” it adds.

The law also stated that the term of office of the officials elected shall commence at noon on October 30, 2025.

The law will take effect immediately after publication in the Official Gazette or a newspaper of general circulation.
