MANILA, Philippines — Hot weather has again descended on the Philippines, starting shortly after the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.

Temperatures have been soaring in some areas, prompting the Department of Education and some local governments to suspend classes to spare the kids from heat-related illnesses, for which the Department of Health has issued a warning and preventive measures.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has prescribed a 30-minute break for each shift of its personnel, particularly traffic enforcers and street sweepers, amid a soaring heat index.
