Task force formed to probe killing of partylist nominee

MANILA, Philippines — One of two men on a motorcycle shot and killed Leninsky Bacud, the third nominee for Ang Bumbero ng Pilipinas (ABP) partylist group, in Sampaloc, Manila, on Monday, two weeks before the May 12 midterm elections, according to the Manila Police District (MPD).

Bacud, a former barangay chair, was inside the covered gym of Barangay 435 in Zone 44, standing with several people when the backrider of a motorcycle approached the group and fired multiple shots at him, the MPD reported.

The police added that Bacud was hit several times at close range with witnesses saying the gunman continued firing at him even as the victim pleaded for his life.

The assailant and his companion also traded gunshots with a police officer who was reportedly a resident in the area, with the bullets hitting parked vehicles. Bacud was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

A special investigation task group was immediately formed to look into the incident, the police said. The motive of the shooting remains unknown.

Manila mayor’s order

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna said she had directed MPD director Brig. Gen. Benigno Guzman to “mobilize all available resources and lead a thorough, impartial and relentless investigation into this murder-assassination case” so that those behind Bacud’s “violent death” will be brought to justice.

In a post on its Facebook page, the ABP condemned any form of violence as it mourned the death of Bacud whom it described as a public servant who was dedicated to the cause of firefighters.

“His memories and principles will remain in our hearts and those of the people he served,” it added.

The group, at the same time, urged its supporters to stay calm, peaceful and united.

“The ABP will stay strong, united and determined to fight for the welfare of every Filipino,” it said.
