MANILA, Philippines – For the first time in her long career, veteran actress Boots Anson-Roa Rodrigo publicly endorsed a political candidate as she joined on Friday fellow artists, directors, producers, and showbiz personalities in supporting senatorial candidate Benhur Abalos.
“This is the first time that I am personally endorsing a candidate,” said Anson-Roa, chairman of the Movie Workers Welfare Foundation (Mowelfund).
Benhur Abalos expresses his gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received throughout the campaign.
“I believe in him because I’ve seen how he works, from his governance for the general public to his specific contributions in the MMDA and DILG, and how he helped in the Manila Film Festival. That’s why I think he’s a perfect fit for our community,” the veteran movie and television personality said at a press conference Friday.

Her endorsement, just days before the elections, marks a rare public stance from one of the industry’s most admired figures and highlights Abalos’s longstanding engagement with the entertainment sector.
Anson-Roa praised Abalos’s work as MMDA Chairman, particularly his leadership in easing the tax burden on film producers. “During his time at the MMFF, he became not only relevant but also deeply concerned about the taxation issues in the movie industry. He spearheaded efforts to reduce amusement taxes, which directly benefited producers. Even after stepping down from MMDA, he remained deeply involved in advocating for lower taxes on the film industry year-round.”
She also pointed to the values instilled in Abalos by his family. “I have a great respect for his parents. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. They instilled values in him that I admire deeply, and it’s no surprise that he’s carrying forward that tradition of service.”
The endorsement was echoed by the children of the late movie producer Lily Monteverde of Regal Entertainment. Atty. Keith Monteverde said, “My mother always supported candidates who truly make a difference in the community. That’s why we are here today, continuing her legacy and supporting Benhur Abalos.”
Roselle Monteverde added, “My mother poured her heart into the movie industry, and we do the same for our country. I truly believe in Benhur Abalos’s ability to serve the people. He has a proven track record—whether as Mayor, MMDA Chair, or DILG Secretary. I know that if he’s elected, he will continue that work in the Senate.”
Abalos, clearly moved by the support, called it one of the most meaningful moments of his campaign. “My journey has been difficult, and the last few days have been particularly challenging. But now, with all these blessings pouring in, it feels like a surprise birthday party. These are friends—true friends—and I’m incredibly thankful.”
He reiterated his commitment to legislation that would address the cost of electricity, reform agricultural policy, improve job security for workers, and protect the country’s marine resources.
“The campaign may be nearing its end, but this is just the beginning,” Abalos said. “I will continue to serve the people with the same passion and dedication I’ve shown throughout my career. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I will never forget this.”
