Robredo proclaimed Naga City mayor, first woman to hold post
NAGA CITY, Philippines—Former Vice President Leni Robredo clinched a landslide victory in her hometown, winning the mayoral race by more than 84,000 votes and becoming the first woman to hold the position.
Robredo was officially proclaimed mayor during a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Sangguniang Panlungsod, accompanied by her three daughters.
Her running mate, former Camarines Sur Rep. Gabriel Bordado Jr., was also proclaimed vice mayor after garnering more than 45,000 votes. He defeated Tato Mendoza, who received 40,282 votes, Benjamin Villafuerte with 1,452 votes, and Topi Fortuna with 729.
Robredo’s “Team Naga” slate dominated the midterm elections, with only two candidates failing to secure seats.
Before rising to national prominence, Robredo served as first lady of Naga City while her late husband, Jesse Robredo, was mayor from 1988 to 1998 and again from 2001 to 2010. He later served as interior secretary from 2010 until his death in a plane crash off Masbate City in 2012.
A lawyer by profession, Leni Robredo served as the representative of Camarines Sur’s 3rd District from 2013 to 2016. She was elected vice president in 2016, becoming the second woman to hold the post, and served until 2022.
In 2022, she ran for president but lost to now-President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
