MANILA, Philippines — Lakas-CMD remains to be the most dominant party inside the House of Representatives, as 104 of its congressional candidates in the 2025 midterm elections have secured seats for the 20th Congress.

In a statement on Tuesday, party president and House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said that this is a vote of confidence not just for candidates, but for the leadership that Lakas-CMD brings.

Data from the Commission on Elections (Comelec), sent to Romualdez by Lakas-CMD executive director Anna Capella Velasco, showed that the party had fielded 128 candidates for congressional districts.  With 104 winning, this translates to a success rate of 81 percent.

“This is a vote of confidence not just in our candidates, but in the kind of leadership and unity that Lakas-CMD represents,” Romualdez said.

“As party president, I am deeply grateful to the Filipino people for reaffirming our role as a driving force for progress and good governance,” he added.

Further data shared by Romualdez’s office showed that the 104 Lakas-CMD who won in the 2025 midterm elections includes 79 incumbent lawmakers who were reelected, and 25 new representatives.

Working closely

According to Romualdez, Lakas-CMD will continue to support President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Bagong Pilipinas legislative agenda.  Also, the Speaker said the party is committed to work closely with its allies in the Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas, the alliance which fielded an 11-person slate for the senatorial race.

“Lakas-CMD is not just winning elections—we’re building a long-term vision of leadership, service, and nation-building. With this fresh mandate, we are ready to work harder, legislate better, and serve every Filipino with even greater urgency,” he said.

“Together with our partners in the Alyansa, we will continue to push for laws that create jobs, protect the vulnerable, improve education, and strengthen our democracy,” he added.

Despite a seeming grip in the House, Lakas-CMD’s number in the House actually decreased by a little, from 109 House members as of September 2024.  Among the last to join the party before the filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2025 elections last October 2024 were Zamboanga del Sur 2nd District Rep. Jeyzel Victoria Yu, Iloilo 5th District Rep. Raul Tupas, and Bukidnon 1st District Rep. Manuel Alba.

Regarding Alyansa, the partial and unofficial count from Comelec’s transparency server as of 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday showed the highest-ranked candidate from the administration-backed slate is ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo, at fourth with 16.80 million votes.

Tulfo is also a member of Lakas-CMD.

Aside from Tulfo, five other Alyansa stalwarts are currently in the Magic 12 as per the partial and unofficial count:

  • Former Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson (7th, 14.85 million)
  • Former Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III (8th, 14.59 million)
  • Senator Pia Cayetano (9th, 14.30 million)
  • Deputy Speaker Camille Villar (10th, 13.35 million)
  • Senator Lito Lapid (10th, 13.11 million)

Alyansa campaign manager and Navotas City Rep. Toby Tiangco earlier said that they still consider the results of the 2025 senatorial race as a vote of confidence for the administration as most of their candidates are poised to win Senate seats.

However, many observers and netizens believe that the Alyansa underperformed despite having six of its candidates in the prospective Magic 12, as pre-election surveys showed that either eight or nine of the administration-backed candidates will win.

Days before the elections, a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed that Tulfo was the front-runner, holding the top spot with 45 percent of the respondents’ votes.  His current fourth-place ranking means he lost three spots.

Sotto meanwhile was poised to be ranked third, but instead, partial and unofficial tallies see him slipping down to eight.  Lapid was fourth, and now 10th, while Binay and Revilla — who were holding the seventh and 11th spots in the SWS survey — are currently out of the Magic 12, ranking 15th and 14th instead. / MR
