Three cities in Cebu province elect new mayors

CEBU CITY — The midterm elections in Cebu showcased a mix of change and continuity, with highly urbanized Cebu City posting a shift.
The new developments come after Cebu City Councilor Nestor Archival won the mayoralty seat over Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia.
Archival garnered 231,411 votes, higher than Garcia’s 156,351 and dismissed Mayor Michael Rama’s 108,197 votes.
Former Mayor Tomas Osmeña was also elected as the new vice mayor, winning over Dondon Hontiveros and Joey Daluz.
For the city’s congressional seats, Edu Rama secured another term as South District representative and Rachel del Mar for the North District.
In Mandaue City, Thadeo Jovito Ouano, an incumbent provincial board member, won a tight race against dismissed Mayor Jonas Cortes.
Ouano led by more than 6,000 votes, getting a total of 103,284 votes.
This number is higher than the 96,853 votes received by Cortes.
The Ouano family demonstrated political strength in the area.
Mandaue Lone Rep. Emmarie Ouano-Dizon won a reelection with 119,133 votes against the 81,705 votes of lawyer Regal Oliva, former Mandaue City treasurer.
In Lapu-Lapu City, incumbent Lone District Rep. Cynthia King-Chan will take over her husband, outgoing Mayor Junard Chan, who in turn will assume the vacated congressional seat of his wife.
The new mayor garnered 142,058 votes over former Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza’s 42,527 votes and Independent candidate Cristine Takahashi’s 38,758 votes.
Mayor Chan, in turn, garnered an overwhelming 160,447 votes against challenger Ryan Yuson’s 61,507 votes.
The entire Team KAABAG slate of Mayor Chan swept all 15 seats, including the reelection of Vice Mayor Celedonio Sitoy and the election of former Canjulao Barangay Captain Rufo Bering as the 12th councilor.
The elected officials were formally proclaimed early dawn on Tuesday./apl
