MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has already finished distributing the honoraria of teachers who served as electoral board members in the 2025 elections, according to Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia.

“As of the other day, we have paid 100% of the honoraria for our electoral board members. We have wholeheartedly complied with our law to pay our electoral board members at least 15 days after the elections,” Garcia told reporters in a mix of Filipino and English during an interview on Wednesday.

“It should be given 10 days [after the elections] but some teachers are participating in the Palarong Pambansa, and therefore, we cannot leave the budget to just anyone else,” he added.

The compensation increase approved by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is on top of the P2,000 across-the-board increase of honoraria for teachers and poll workers who served in the elections.

Garcia also said that they will wait for some teachers who attend the Palarong Pambansa in Ilocos before they start the distribution of the additional pay.

Meanwhile, Garcia previously said that the poll body will appeal to Marcos to grant the P2,000 honoraria for teachers who will serve in the 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) on December 1.

Garcia noted that the additional honoraria for teachers who served in the 2025 midterm elections will not be applied to the 2025 BSKE due to the Comelec’s budget cut for this year.

The Comelec requested a total budget of P49.5 billion for 2025. However, the poll body was allotted a P35.22 budget under the 2025 General Appropriations Act. Of this figure, around P11 billion will be allocated for the conduct of the 2025 BSKE. /jpv
