MANILA, Philippines — The barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections slated on December 1 will push through unless they are canceled or postponed by law, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro  said on Wednesday.

Castro made remark amid proposals to extend the term of barangay and SK officials from three years to six years and move the elections to May 2029.

“The elections will push through as long as no law has been issued to cancel or postpone it,” Castro said in a Palace press briefing.

Regarding the proposed term extension, Castro said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. respects the legislative process but noted that any changes must align with the goal of achieving good local governance and community development.

On Monday, the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading House Bill No. 11287 — a measure seeking to amend Republic Act No. 7160, or the Local Government Code of 1991, to extend the term of barangay officials and reschedule the next barangay and SK elections to May 2029.

The House approved the same bill on second reading last January 2024, before Congress adjourned its session for the election season.
