Negros Island Region has 24,506 new voters–Comelec

BACOLOD CITY—Voter turnout for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) registration in the Negros Island Region over the last three days has reached 24,506, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) here reported.

As of Sunday, 15,356 of the new registrants, or the highest number, were from Negros Occidental, making up 37 percent of the entire region, according to Comelec Regional Elections officer Lionel Marcos Castillano.

Postponed

Negros Oriental followed with 8,476, and Siquijor, 674.

Castillano also noted that, in Negros Occidental, 8,002 of the new registrants were women and only 7,354 were men.

Among the new registrants in Negros Occidental, Cadiz City topped the list, said Provincial Elections Supervisor Ian Lee Ananoria.

While the voter registration period, which began on Aug. 1, will continue until Aug. 10, the BSKE, originally scheduled for Dec. 1 this year, is expected to be postponed.

Comelec Chair George Garcia said on Friday that President Marcos Jr. is expected to sign, on Aug. 12, a law postponing the BSKE elections to the first Monday of November 2026. —CARLA P. GOMEZ
