A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck a town in Davao Oriental on Sunday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. 

Key officials of DPWH, DSWD, DepEd, and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) met in Davao Oriental on Saturday.

Repair costs on schools heavily damaged by the recent earthquake and aftershocks in Davao Oriental had already reached P2.23 billion.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that rocked Davao Oriental on Friday morning has left the provincial health-care system severely strained.

Two major quakes struck Manay, Davao Oriental—the first was the magnitude 7.4 at 9:43 a.m.;second was the magnitude 6.8 tremor at 7:12 p.m.

“The damage seen was on local roads caused by several landslides following the earthquake,” the agency added.

As a result of Friday morning’s violent shaking, a landslide in the mining village of Pantukan town left three dead and 10 others injured.

The schools damaged by the spate of earthquakes in Cebu and Davao Oriental, Angara said that validation and damage assessments are ongoing.

The DOT reiterated that tourists should avoid damaged or potentially unsafe structures and comply with safety procedures…

“On the instructions of the President, all concerned frontline agencies were tasked to work round-the-clock to provide rescue and relief…”

State seismologists said both quakes may be different occurrences, even as they happened in nearby locations.

Dazed survivors of two major earthquakes in Davao Oriental awoke on Saturday to scenes of devastation, after over 800 aftershocks hit the region overnight.

Some 70,142 families in Davao Oriental province were affected by the powerful earthquakes that struck on Friday.

Several government and private school buildings in Valencia City sustained structural damage from the magnitude 7.4 earthquake off Davao Oriental on Friday.

All tsunami warnings issued after the magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Davao Oriental have been canceled, said Phivolcs.

A combined total of 569 aftershocks have so far been recorded after the magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 “doublet earthquake” hit Davao Oriental.

Death toll of the Davao Oriental 7.4-magnitude quake has climbed up to seven, with three more people confirmed dead in Pantukan town.

A total of 36 courts in the Davao Region were damaged by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck off Davao Oriental, says the Supreme Court.

However, Phivolcs said it is still analyzing the earthquake parameters “to further characterize” the two recent tectonic events.

Phivolcs has downgraded the earthquake that struck the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental at 7:12 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10 from a magnitude of 6.9 to 6.8.

The first tsunami waves are expected to arrive between 7:12 p.m. and 9:12 p.m. with the waves expected to continue “for hours.”

No major damage was reported at airports operated by the CAAP following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Davao Oriental.

“Total generation loss was around 373.5MW (megawatts), initial estimate of affected loads in Mindanao is around 739MW,” it said.

At least 12 students from various schools in Digos City were brought to Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital after the strong quake that jolted Mindanao and the Visayas on Friday morning.

A man in Agdao district in Davao Citydied as a concrete wall crashed and hit him at the height of the magnitude 7.4 quake that struck on Friday morning.

“These are all independent earthquake generators, no connection with the Philippine Trench and Bogo Bay fault,” said Bacolcol.

Phivolcs revealed that these aftershocks—recorded in 41 different areas—occurred as of 1 p.m., just a few hours after the main tremor.

The Philippine Coast Guard’s Southeastern Mindanao District has ordered a suspension of all sea travel in the Davao region owing to the tsunami warning after the Davao Oriental quake.

Over 12,000 schools across Mindanao and parts of the Visayas were affected, and at least 559 schools suspended classes after the Davao Oriental quake, education officials said.

Phivolcs has canceled all tsunami warnings issued after magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Davao Oriental on Friday morning.

Brawner said AFP units in EastMinCom were the first to respond, sending engineers and rescue teams to affected coastal communities.
