A 73-year-old woman and her 21-year-old female grandchild died in a residential fire Borongan City, Eastern Samar, amid the onslaught of Typhoon Uwan.

A fire broke out early Saturday morning in Leyte, destroying more than 80 houses and five commercial establishments as Uwan approached.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB)-Western Visayas warned that rains from Super Typhoon Uwan may cause landslides and flooding in Antique province.

Local authorities have placed Valencia City under red alert status as Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong) continues to bring rains.

Badrina said that Uwan is expected to intensify into a super typhoon, or at least be considered a “strong” typhoon.

In Batanes, about 80 tourists were stranded due to cancellations of flights between the capital, Basco, and Metro Manila.

Several local governments such as Caloocan, Las Piñas, Valenzuela and Pateros already suspended classes on Monday.

Pagasa in its 5 a.m. update said that Uwan was last seen 195 kilometers east of Catanduanes, and has maximum sustained winds of 175 kph.

Earlier, Pagasa also said that because of Uwan’s quick movement, the typhoon may make landfall over the Isabela-Aurora area.

Other netizens uploaded videos of strong rains in Catanduanes, which is also expected to bear Uwan’s brunt.

Pagasa also warned about the possibility of storm surges, or walls of water forced by a cyclone towards coastal areas.

Uwan intensified further and started to pick up speed, now packing maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour.

Several local government units (LGUs) have declared class and government work suspensions for Monday, Nov. 10.

Typhoon Uwan will then cross over the Luzon landmass and emerge over the West Philippine Sea by Monday morning.

“Now is the time to act. Every minute counts, and every barangay must be ready. We need swift, coordinated action.”
