BARMM, Opapru mourn passing of region’s housing minister

COTABATO CITY – The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) mourns the passing today, Jan. 13, of a key pillar in building the institutions of self-governance.
BARMM interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua announced the passing of Minister Hamid Aminoddin D. Barra of the Ministry of Human Settlements and Development (MHSD-BARMM).
Macacua did not reveal the cause of death, but sources in BARMM said he passed away due to a lingering illness.
“He was a key pillar of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao,” Macacua said of Barra, who served as housing minister since 2019.
He was also appointed as one of the first members of the interim parliament in 2019.
Barra continued to serve as MHSD minister even after his term as parliament member ended in 2022.
“Through his dedication and vision, he strengthened the ministry and advanced programs that improved the lives of Bangsamoro people,” Macacua said of Barra.
Even before the establishment of BARMM, Barra played an important role in the Bangsamoro peace process as a member of the negotiating panel that led to the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).
“His service and commitment to peace and development will be remembered and honored,” Macacua added.
The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (Opapru) also mourn the passing of Minister Barra.
“Minister Barra was not only a respected legal practitioner and public servant but a dedicated peacebuilder and a beacon of hope for the Bangsamoro region,” the Opapru said in a statement.
Opapru recognized his contributions as a member of the government negotiating panel that paved the way for the signing of the CAB between the government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front in 2014.
“Under his able leadership as Minister of the MHSD, the ministry advanced projects and programs that provided sustainable housing, established resilient communities, and uplifted the lives of the Bangsamoro people,” Opapru added.
The Opapru said as a member of the Bangsamoro Government, Barra was best known as a staunch advocate for interfaith harmony and cooperation, representing the Muslim Ummah in numerous dialogues and fora to share insights on Islamic history in the Philippines and the importance of understanding amidst differences to foster peace.
“His passing is deeply felt in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him,” the Opapru said. /gsg
